A Matthew 18 Miracle Story

Our God is an awesome God.  There is none like Him.  He is the one and only, true and living God, Creator of all, above all and in all, and His desire is for us, His created ones, to know Him.  How often we have shared with everyone we meet this truth based on Holy Scripture:  We are not human beings have a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience.  And, as we are having this human experience, we do not have to be limited by the time and space that some think limit our abilities to function within other dimensions of God’s creation.  We do not have to be bound by them.  Jesus wasn’t.  And, Jesus, the completely human Son of God and Son of Man, said that “Greater works than I do, you will do, because I go to my Father, which is in Heaven, (John 14:12).”

A vitally important truth about accessing the supernatural power that is ours as children of the Living God, is found in the teaching of Jesus Christ in Matthew, chapter 18.

Here, in Matthew 18:15-20, among many other amazing teachings, Jesus Christ tells his followers about the Prerequisite to Power in prayer.  Hear the words of the Master.

15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector. 18 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19 “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Because the heart of our Savior is that we be One just as He and the Father are One, we have had a burden on our heart to preach this truth of God’s word to His bride, the church, and for two years all across these United States, we have preached this message to every church where we have had opportunity to stand behind the sacred desk .

Now, listen to this miracle.

Shortly after preaching the sermon from the Matthew 18 text above, Prerequisite to Power, and witnessing an enormous harvest of souls in a church in Florida, I met the wife of a man, who plays defensive end for the Detroit Lions. She asked me for my phone number and permission to give it along with one of our DVDs to her husband.

Almost immediately thereafter, I heard from her husband, and he and I have been praying buddies ever since. We made a Matthew 18 covenant, which is never to speak evil of one another or allow others to speak evil of one of us in the other’s presence without immediately stopping that individual and calling one another. This is so that the Matthew 18 “power-to-agree on earth as touching anything and God will do it” would be given to us. Together, we agreed and asked God to provide an opportunity for us to speak in the public schools in this football player’s community. This was in June.

A few weeks later, I was with Lonnie Short, a pastor friend in Michigan who had begun a new church plant (with a vision very close to what has been on my heart if God would ever allow me to pastor).   The church was only two years old and had a small congregation. The Detroit Lions’ football player, my new Matthew 18 covenant friend, heard that I was going to be there, and so he came and brought his friend, who is a linebacker for the Detroit Lions.

Four precious souls were saved that Sunday morning in that little church trying to get started in a schoolhouse. And, along with that miracle, what happened next is a miracle that will live on in history.

As I sat at a table until 3:45 that afternoon ministering to the people from the church and many of our Worshipping Warriors from the Detroit area, who had also come to the service, I was signing copies of my book, A Pocket Full of Pennies, and a fine-looking gentleman walked up to me and said, “I am one of the principals at the high school, and we want to invite you, Rick, to come and speak in the junior and senior high, as soon as possible.”

I turned to my left to see my new praying buddy, the Detroit Lions’ football player, and saw his eyes grow as wide as saucers.  He said, “That is what we have been agreeing together in prayer for since June!”

I looked at him and said, “If you are going to be a minister, and I am going to help you, then you need to understand that this…prayer…is the source of all power, the channel of all blessings, and the only real way to obtain fruit that remains.  Prayer is the source.”

Upon God miraculously giving us an entrée into the schools, the assemblies were scheduled along with meetings at a local church for September.  In September, we joyfully traveled to this community in Michigan where we spoke in both the junior and senior high schools delivering our secular Power of a Choice message. We explained as we always do to students using real life stories, anecdotes, laughter and powerful truth that they have the power to choose, but they do not have the power to choose the consequences of their choices.

On their own, students exercised their freedom of choice and came to the local church that night to hear me speak again there. So many came, there was no room for the regular church people to sit! God’s glory came down, and moved mightily among us.  Two hundred seventy six souls including over 70 parents who had brought their junior high students filled out cards professing faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ for salvation! Glory to God alone!

This is the power of believing, agreeing prayer! God’s word is truth. Oneness, unity among believers is so near and dear to the Savior’s heart. God is love, and love compels us to reconcile differences.  We may not always agree with each other, but we must agree to disagree in love – for it is the relationship that matters.

We are One in Christ Jesus.  What we do to our brother, we do to ourselves.  Not only that, whatever we do to our brother – we also do to Christ.

Remember on the road to Damascus, Jesus said to Saul (later renamed Paul), “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute ME? (Acts 9:4)  Saul was persecuting Christians, and Jesus Christ made it abundantly clear that whatever was done to one of “his brothers” was done to Him.

Christ has commanded us to “Love one another as I have loved you (John 15:12).” When we follow these teachings of Christ – to love one another, to maintain unity in the Church, not to talk about each other, but to talk to each other – amazing agreeing power in prayer is ours, and we do indeed see God’s supernatural answers to prayers in our lives.

We have seen so many, they are so numerous, sadly, we are having a hard time keeping up with recording them all.  Many are recorded in our first book, A Pocket Full of Pennies, and many more of these amazing miracles stories are found in our new book soon to be published, In Sync with God.

We challenge every believer to live the Matthew 18 covenant so that our lives can be used in the harvest of God to bring in “fruit that remains (John 15:16)” for it is the only thing that matters in all the world, the souls of men.
