Addiction is a developmentally acquired brain disease. When a human being uses
artificial substances or negative behaviors to deal with trauma or pain in their
life, changes take place in the brains shape and functioning. These changes further
propel the individual to use the substance or behavior as a coping mechanism.
Eventually, these choices lead to further pain and trauma as the individual
becomes trapped by, not only the original source of pain but the coping mechanisms
used to anesthetize their pain.
